WEIGHT GAIN IN PREGNANCY

· Ideal weight gain is one indicator of adequate diet in pregnancy.
· This gain should result from wise food choices and not from “empty” calories.
· If your weight is ideal for your height and age, you can comfortably gain 10 - 12 kg. Weight throughout pregnancy.
· This may seem like a lot of excess weight, but the majority of it is shed as soon as you have delivered the afterbirth,
· Women who enter pregnancy 20% over weight have an added risk of high blood pressure, Diabetes, etc.
· To prevent excess weight gain, eat sensibly, and enjoy every bite you take.
· Try not to indulge in food because you are bored, or as a comforter .
· Also now is not the time to venture into crazy diets which promise dramatic weight loss as you may deprive yourself and your growing baby of the vitamins and minerals essential for good growth and development.
Distribution of weight Gain:
· 1st trimester - total of 1- 1/2 to 2 kg.
Most of this gain is due to increase in blood volume and increase in of size uterus.
· 2nd Trimester - you will put on about 1/2 kg. Every month.
· 3rd Trimester - steady gain of about 1- 1/2 kg. Every week... During this time increase in weight is accounted for by the growth of baby. Sudden increase in weight in 2nd or 3rd trimester could indicate retention of water.
· If you feel you need to know if you are gaining too much body fat, measure the top of your thighs; the measurement should remain more or less stable throughout your pregnancy, although towards the end you may notice a slight increase.
Weight Gain Division
Baby’s Weight 3 -3.5 kg.
Placenta 3/4 - 1 kg.
Uterine 3/4 - 1 kg.
Amniotic fluid 3/4 - 1 kg.
Increase Blood volume 3/2 - 2 kg.
Weight gain in form of fat 1 -2 kg.
Breasts 1/2 - 1 kg.
Retained body fluid 1/2 -1 kg.
Total 10 -13 kg.
