WEIGHT GAIN IN PREGNANCY

·         Ideal  weight   gain is one  indicator of adequate diet   in pregnancy.

·         This  gain  should  result from  wise  food  choices  and  not  from  “empty” calories.

·         If  your  weight  is  ideal  for  your  height  and  age,  you  can  comfortably gain  10 - 12  kg.  Weight throughout    pregnancy.

·         This  may  seem  like  a  lot  of excess  weight,  but  the  majority  of it  is  shed  as  soon  as  you  have  delivered    the  afterbirth,

·         Women  who   enter  pregnancy    20%   over  weight  have  an  added   risk  of  high  blood  pressure,  Diabetes,  etc.

·         To prevent  excess  weight  gain,  eat  sensibly,  and  enjoy  every  bite  you   take.

·         Try  not  to  indulge  in  food  because you  are  bored, or  as  a  comforter .

·         Also  now  is  not  the time  to  venture  into  crazy  diets  which  promise  dramatic  weight  loss  as  you  may  deprive  yourself  and  your  growing   baby  of  the  vitamins  and minerals  essential  for  good  growth  and  development.

Distribution of weight Gain:

·         1st   trimester - total of   1- 1/2 to 2 kg.

Most of  this   gain  is  due to  increase  in  blood    volume  and  increase    in  of size  uterus.

·         2nd  Trimester  -  you  will  put  on  about  1/2  kg.   Every month.

·         3rd Trimester - steady gain of about 1- 1/2 kg.  Every  week...   During  this  time   increase  in  weight  is  accounted    for  by  the  growth   of  baby.  Sudden increase in weight in 2nd or 3rd trimester could indicate retention of water.

·         If  you  feel  you need  to  know  if  you  are  gaining  too  much  body  fat, measure  the top  of  your  thighs;  the  measurement  should  remain  more  or less  stable  throughout  your pregnancy,  although  towards  the  end you may  notice  a  slight  increase.
